JULY 30th , 2008
Canada’s own Patrick Cote (Pictures) will be the next brave challenger for the UFC middleweight title, which is currently under the stranglehold of Anderson Silva (Pictures). Cote will face the man who many consider the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter on October 25 from the Allstate Arena in Chicago.

Cote (13-4) earned his shot against the feared Brazilian striker after a four-fight win streak inside the Octagon. The Quebec City son most recently garnered a split decision win over the highly touted Ricardo Almeida (Pictures) at UFC 86 on July 5. The untimely injury of Yushin Okami (Pictures), in line for the next crack at Silva, cleared the way for the matchup announced last Saturday.

Cote had just returned from a Caribbean vacation when he heard about Okami’s broken hand and the possibility of stepping in to replace him.

“When I came back everybody asked, ‘Did you hear the news? Maybe you will fight Anderson Silva (Pictures),’” said Cote. “Then two days later my manager (Stephane Patry) told me that the UFC wanted to put Anderson against me.”

Cote said he accepted the bout immediately.

“I do this sport to be No. 1, so I can’t ask for more. To fight the best guy pound-for-pound in the world and to have a chance to get a title shot – it’s perfect,” said Cote. “I’m not scared of anybody – I said yes to fight Tito Ortiz (Pictures) on four days notice when I was in a different weight division, so to fight Anderson Silva (Pictures) is the ultimate goal for me. I want to be champion of my weight class.”

Cote, 28, credits his dual training facilities between coach Fabio Holanda (Pictures) and BTT Canada in Montreal and instructor Mark DellaGrotte and Sityodtong in Boston for helping him clear the path to gold.

“Since I’ve gone to Sityodtong I’m undefeated, but I think it’s a combination of Sityodtong and my team, BTT Canada, that has made me better,” he said. “Fabio Holanda (Pictures) and Mark DellaGrotte work very well together, and I think I’ve found a good combination to be champion. I had a rough start with the UFC, but now all of my bad luck is behind me and the future is good.”

Holanda believes his rising student is a different fighter now then when he lost at “The Ultimate Fighter 4” finale to Travis Lutter (Pictures) in Nov. 2006, and that a good game plan means all the difference in a fight.

“His best fight for me ever was against Almeida,” Holanda told Sherdog.com. “People don’t realize that Almeida is like ten times better than Lutter. With Lutter he was a different fighter. You have no idea – I can’t explain. Everybody thought it would be Almeida all the way, but from his fight with Lutter to his fight with Almeida it’s a huge difference – he’s not the same fighter any more.”

New fighter or not, Silva –- untouchable in his last seven fights -- still poses a very formidable threat. What does Cote bring to the table that others have failed to do before?

“I think I have the best style to fight this guy. I have a good chin, I’ll go forward, and I think every time he fights his opponent has already lost because he’s scared of him,” said Cote, who has never been knocked out in training. “I know that this guy is very, very good, but we have a good game plan for the fight, and I’m 100% confident that I will win.”

DellaGrotte is just as assured.

“We’ve known him (Silva) for awhile and have studied him for awhile, and we’re going to try to exploit him in several areas,” said the regarded trainer. “It’s not an easy task, but this is a rare opportunity to do something that the world doesn’t think we can do, and Patrick is the type of guy that rises to the occasion.”

BTT CANADA AT UFC 86

Patrick Cote defeated Ricardo Almeida Saturday night at UFC 86 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas moving himself into title contention to vie for the Ultimate Fighting Championship's middleweight crown currently held by Anderson Silva.

Cote has become known for his toughness and punching power, but the hard hitting Canadian was unable to finish Almeida, winning by split decision. "I will knock everyone out who wants to trade with me. I will knockout every striker who tries to trade with me, Cote told MMAWeekly. "It was the match up. Sometimes the match up is like that."

"I did not want to play the Jiu-Jitsu game with this guy. This guy is world class in Jiu-Jitsu. He's one of the best in the world," commented Cote.

"I was fighting one of the best Jiu-Jitsu guys in the world. This guy was no joke. My game plan was to sprawl and brawl and footwork. And I did exactly what I wanted to do. I showed that I've improved a lot on my wrestling and my ground game. I escaped from four guillotines. My wrestling was good. He took me down, but I was able to get back up. He won the first round, but after that I think I won... I did exactly what I wanted to do and I won."

UFC president Dana White stated in the UFC 86 pre-fight press conference that the winner of the Patrick Cote and Ricardo Almeida bout would receive a title shot against the winner of Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami planned for later this year.

Asked about White's comments, Cote said, "I'm ready for anybody. I ain't scared of anybody in my weight class. But I will believe it when I sign the contract."

Cote spoke with MMAWeekly after his bout, but before the post-fight press conference. White assured to the media during the post-fight presser that Cote would indeed get a shot at the UFC middleweight title.

White admitted that the Cote and Almeida fight was "boring," but maintained that Cote would get an opportunity to fight for the belt to the media during the post-fight press conference. "Sometimes when you have two guys who are really, really good fight each other that's what happens. Especially when you have two guys with different game plans," said the UFC president. "One wants to keep it standing. One wants to go to the ground. And that's what happened tonight with those two."

"He's getting a title shot," reiterated White.

BTT Canada fighters go 4 for 4 at TKO 34

Here is a recap of the fights:

Akawui Riquelme vs Christopher Hulme: Fight is cancelled

Tim Wadsworth vs Jeff Harrison: After a failed knee attempt by Jeff Harrison, Tim quickly took his opponent down and proceeded to gain a dominant position, work into full mount and ended the fight with a ground and pound TKO stoppage.

Stephane Vigneault vs Yaotzin Mesa: In the first round, the fight went quickly to the ground where both fighters traded positions until Stephane very nearly ended the fight with an armbar that his opponent somehow withstood, taking the fight to a second round. The second round saw the fight go the ground once again, this time Stephane was able to mount his opponent and ground and pound his way to a TKO stoppage.

Stephane Dube vs Yannick Galipeau: After a brief stand-up exchange by these two karate black belts, Stephane Dube ran his opponent across the ring and into the cage leading to a takedown. He then worked himself into a more dominant position, gained mount and ground and pounded his way to a TKO stoppage.

Steve Bosse vs Wes Sims: This highly anticipated heavyweight match began with the heavy hitting Bosse attacking his much taller opponent with strikes and leg kicks and eventually was able to take him down and began to deliver strikes from his opponent’s guard. At this point both fighters were stood up and were led to believe that the fight was over. An infuriated Sims and his coach Mark Coleman protested with the referee and the officials. It was then announced that the fight was not over, it had only been stopped to warn Bosse to not hold the fence. Both fighters were placed back in their corners and the fight resumed. Some more heavy strikes from Bosse sent Sims to the ground. Sims then grabbed a hold of Bosse’s leg and attempted a knee bar. Bosse rolled around attempting to get out of it and eventually secured an ankle lock of his own which ended the fight late in the first round.

Congratulations to all the BTT Canada fighters on a very successful evening and for running the winning streak to 13 fights!!!

BTT-CANADA AT TKO

Jody Burke, however, gave Bosse the thumbs down from across the ring and informed him he'd soon be taking a nap.

To begin the bout, Burke threw a low kick that Bosse caught and turned into a takedown. Bosse allowed his foe back up, though, and then he let go a flurry of punches that prompted Burke to reconsider his pre-fight gestures and avoid all standup.

Burke tried to pull guard, but Bosse unloaded a barrage of rights that forced him to turtle. After a few more shots, Burke tapped.

Samuel Guillet (Pictures) worked behind a jab to catch Yves Lemelin with a straight left that snapped his head back. He then took down Lemelin and worked short elbows while looking to trap an arm.

After a scramble, Guillet locked in a tight armbar. Lemelin appeared to tap, but he immediately protested the stoppage 2:25 into round one.

Both opponents study themselves in the middle of the ring. Wadsworth get the single leg take down and take the side control. Then he pass the half guard et works for the full mount. Savard bring him back in his guard and Wadsworth throw punches from the guard. David is cut at his left eye and is bleeding. Wadsworth is still in Savard's guard throwing punches. He finally gets the full mount, but Savard gives him his back. Wadsworth throws a few solid elbows at Savard's head and the referee, Denis Bourdon, stop the fight. Wadsworth by TKO at 2:28 of the 1st round

BTT CANADA AT UFC

Patrick Cote (Pictures) made good on his promise that his fight with Ultimate Fighter 3 winner Kendall Grove (Pictures) would be over before the bell to end round two. In fact, he pulled out the knockout win a full round earlier after connecting with a hard overhand right behind the ear.

For Cote, not only is it a much-needed win against a highly recognizable fighter, but the victory is also meaningful for the way the French Canadian pulled it out.

Cote has much been criticized for his unwillingness to engage and press the action after having come in to the UFC with the aura of being a devastating striker in his native Quebec. Saturday night a noticeably different Patrick Cote (Pictures) fought in the octagon and a bright, new future appears to be on the horizon

AUGUST 27th , 2007

BTT CANADA AT UFC

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) looks to have shrugged off the potentially career-crippling loss to Matt Serra (Pictures) as he dictated all aspects of his fight with Josh Koscheck (Pictures) Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. St. Pierre, who at one point heard his name in those conversations about best pound-for-pound did what many, more specifically, Koscheck never expected: put the four-time NCAA Division I All-American on his back.

St. Pierre used Koscheck's greatest strength to better his opponent.

"Josh Koscheck (Pictures) is a great wrestler, he's used to fighting from the top position," St. Pierre said in a post-fight interview with Sportsnet's RJ Broadhead. "He's not used to fighting from his back. I knew it: my game plan was to take him out of his comfort zone."

JUNE 23rd, 2007

Cornered by UFC veteran Patrick Cote, Fabio Holanda used his strong ground and pound tactics to take out the durable and game Shaun Krysa in the second round of their fight to get back on the winning track. Holanda was able to show a solid punching arsenal landing some solid shots to the face of the previously undefeated Krysa and took the mount and pound victory in the second stanza.

In a battle of tactical ju-jitsu masters, it was a little shocking to see so much stand up and equally as eye-popping to see the end result. Montreal's Fabio "The Mastermind" Holanda, the Brazilian ju-jitsu coach of both MFC middleweight champion Patrick Cote and former UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre, landed punches almost at will against Sean Krysa of Georgetown, Ont. Krysa was battered a number of times in Round 1 and after failing to lock on an armbar early in Round 2, Krysa was down on his back and taking several damaging hammerfist shots before he tapped out at 1:48. After the fight as he was seated next to Cote and MFC light heavyweight champ Victor Valimaki, Holanda politely requested that his third appearance in the MFC ring come with a lightweight title belt on the line.

Congratulations Fabio Holanda from your team mates at BTT Canada.

We never thought that this would turn out any other way.

See you when you get back.

09 DE FEVEREIRODE 2007

The second title on the line Friday evening saw Sam Stout (Pictures) defend his lightweight belt against Fabio Holanda (Pictures), a man whom many thought would easily submit him in the same fashion Kenny Florian (Pictures) did back at the Ultimate Fighter 3 finale.

Arguably one of the most talented grapplers in the sport, Holanda took Stout (11-2-1) down at will and controlled the champion on the ground, moving from guard to side-control and on to full-mount. At one point in the opening stanza, it looked as though Holanda was on his way to victory with a Kimura, yet amazingly Stout escaped and returned to his feet.

Holanda continued the takedown assault, tying up Stout before putting him back on the mat again and again. But Stout, relentless in his efforts to get back to his feet, would win the cardio battle. Every time Holanda was instructed by the referee to stand after a Stout escape, the 28-year-old Brazilian would lay on his back to catch his breath.

Round two saw more of the same. Stout, after dealing with Holanda’s takedowns, continually tried to engage on the feet. A visibly winded Holanda looked as though we was fading — faster than many expected. As the bell sounded to end the round, Holanda was exhausted and required assistance from his corner.

It was clear Holanda (4-5-0) did not have anything left in the tank and his corner signaled that he could not continue, giving the belt-retaining victory to the 22-year-old champion.

05 DE FEVEREIRO DE 2007

Patrick Cote (Pictures) vs. Scott Smith
Round 1
Cote fires a hard kick to the legs of Smith. Another kick from Cote finds its target. Cote lands a straight right to the body. Cote clinches with Smith against the fence. Smith backs away and throws a overhand right that connects. Smith pushes Cote against the cage and lands a few punches and an elbow. Cote scores a sneaky takedown and lands a few quick punches but Smith works back to his feet. Cote with another lowkick. Cote takes the round on the Sherdog.com scorecard, 10-9.

Round 2
Smith checks a Cote low kick. Cote lunges in with a “Superman” punch that grazes. The fighters exchange a few strikes before clinching against the cage. Cote is working for a takedown but Smith is defending well. Cote lands a big punch that rocks Smith, but the Canadian does not follow, perhaps remembering the Smith-Sell fight. Smith fakes a crane kick and throws a left kick to the body. Smith lands a left-right combo to the head of Cote. He answers with a low kick. Cote lands a few more low kicks before the round expires. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Cote.

Round 3
Smith attacks Cote with a flurry of punches then shoots for a takedown, but Cote defends. Smith throws a wild left hand and eats a right hand in the process. Cote lands a body shot ad unloads with a series of punches. Cote backs away as soon as Smith tries to answer. Smith rocks Cote with a right hand but the Canadian smartly clinches and recovers. The fighters work against the cage as the crowd showers them with boos. Cote throws a furry of punches then goes back to the clinch. Smith lands an elbow. Sherdog.com scores the round for Cote, 10-9. All three judges score the bout 30-27 for Patrick Cote.

05 DE FEVEREIRO DE 2007

SEAN LOCKE BY ARM TRIANGLE CHOKE. Sean Locke displayed some of the quality grappling work the Fabio Holanda student is known for, but not before taking some abuse at the hands of the heavy handed Chambers. Locke’s inexperience in the stand up showed as Chambers was able to control the stand-up exchanges in the early goings, but Locke was eventually able to secure a takedown and used his superior jiu jitus to pass to mount, and at the behest of corner-man Jason MacDonald elbowed and punched his opponent on the ground softening him up, before cinching in the fight finishing Arm Triangle choke that closed out the fight. Sean Locke over Dan Chambers Submission Arm Triangle Choke at 4:50 of the first stanza.

02 DE JANEIRO DE 2007

MONTREAL, QUEBEC (CANADA), January 2nd 2007 - TKO Major League MMA is delighted to give their loyal fans an astonishing New Year’s present with the announcement of a third Championship fight to the already stacked, TKO 28: INEVITABLE card!  TKO World Lightweight Champion, SAM “HANDS OF STONE” STOUT (10-2-1) returns to defend his title against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, FABIO “THE MASTERMIND” HOLANDA (4-4-0).  This fight has been anticipated for many years by knowledgeable Canadian MMA fans who appreciate how intriguing and exciting this match-up is!  If there was any doubt about this being the best card in Canadian history, there’s certainly none now!
Holanda has a black belt in jiu-jitsu and he was Georges St-Pierre’s grappling instructor for many years.  One should be careful not to judge him by his .500 record.  All of his losses came to top notch UFC veterans.  He’s only lost once since dropping to 155 lbs.  Holanda looked tremendously impressive in his last TKO appearance stopping the undefeated Alvin Robinson via ground and pound, late in round two.  Holanda knows he can grapple with the best in the world at 155 lbs and he plans to utilize those skills to capture the TKO World Championship!
Stout is also coming off a remarkable performance as he exacted his revenge by submitting the submission artist, Jay Estrada.  Stout is undoubtedly one of the most exciting Lightweight fighters in the world.  His ruthless aggression and punishing strikes have made him a TKO favorite; He’s also been in some of the most memorable battles in the company’s history such as his fights against Dave Goulet, Donald Ouimet and Tyler Jackson.   Stout is very young and hungry and he’s determined not to let anything or anyone come between him and his title!
This is a battle between TKO’s best Lightweight striker versus TKO’s best Lightweight grappler!  If Holanda can take Stout down, he’ll try to end the fight quickly as he did against Canadian Lightweight standouts, Kultar Gill and Blake Fredrickson.  On their feet, Stout’s striking is in a different class and he is also known for being a cardio machine and will likely posses the edge the longer this five round fight lasts
Although the rule of thumb is that the superior grappler normally defeats the striker, Stout’s recent victory by armbar proves that he can’t be considered a one dimensional fighter.  Still, Holanda’s ground game is on another planet compared to most!  This fascinating championship fight is set to rock the Bell Centre!

20 DE OUTUBRO DE 2006
Fabio Holanda gears up for Stout showdown

He’s ready. More than ready. The time is right and so is everything in the game plan of Fabio “The Mastermind” Holanda.

For too long, Holanda has waited for his chance to be recognized as the best lightweight in Canada. For that to happen, the Pro Camp Sports Management fighter has to get through Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout. Fans across the country have wanted to see this fight happen, but time and again when it looks as though it might actually come off, something comes up that kills the plan.

Once more, Holanda is putting the heat on Stout – this time through the Z-Files.

Z-Files: Let’s put all the cards on the table. Is Sam Stout ducking you?

FH: I think maybe he is ducking me. It sure looks like that to me. I will take him down and submit him.

Z-Files: So when do you see this fight happening?

FH: I am waiting for it. I believe I am the No. 1 contender and I expect to fight him at the next TKO show (Feb. 9, 2007). The opportunity is right. I think they have been trying to get him to do the rematch with Jay Estrada, but I don’t see any reason to delay this any longer.

Z-Files: Because of his striking ability does he give you any cause for concern?

FH: No problems at all.

Z-Files: Another of the guys you’d like to fight is Kenny “Ken-Flo” Florian. Were you surprised by his loss at UFC 65?

FH: It was what I expected. I knew Sean Sherk would be victorious with his game plan because he is too strong. He is a good wrestler and I knew he would use that against him.

Z-Files: So after you’ve beaten each other in grappling tournaments, is Florian still the guy you’d like to fight the most along with Stout?

FH: They’re at the top of the list. My game plan is still pretty much the same for both of them.

Z-Files: You’ve won four of your last five fights heading into your Dec. 2 battle with Shaun Krysa at ECC. What will it take for you to join your training partner Patrick “The Predator” Cote and Pro Camp teammate Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald in the UFC?

FH: I think it will take about three more fights. Once my record is a bit better I will be there. For sure that is what I want.

Z-Files: It seems that you’re confidence is on the rise.

FH: When you train hard, it makes you confident. I am training very hard right now because I’m getting Cote ready for “The Ultimate Fighter” final. The training with Patrick is making me ready to fight and right now I pretty much feel like I’m ready to fight anybody.

Z-Files: Give me a clue about how Cote’s preparation is going.

FH: He looks great. I can’t say too much but I will say that he is going to surprise a lot of people. His oponent going to have to fight Patrick’s fight.

09 DE SETEMBRO DE 2006

Brazilian Top Team black belt Fabio “The Mastermind” Holanda was looking to even out his MMA record to 4-4 after starting his career at a less then impressive 0-3. Going into this fight, Holanda was probably one of  the best fighters in the world with a losing record, he has shown the ability to compete with the best in the world starting off his MMA career with competitive losses to multiple time UFC veterans Thiago Alves, Drew Fickett, and Jay Heiron, all of whom currently fight at 170 lbs. Holanda has since gone 3-1 with his lone loss coming at the hands of Ultimate Fighter 4 competitor Rich Clementi in a fight he was winning until he gassed out in the third round.

Edmonton native Mike Bell has consistently shown the ability to throw down and gave undefeated Team Tompkins phenom Chris Horodecki all he could handle in his TKO debut, but Bell has had an up and down career of his own and this fight would prove to be the biggest test of his career.

Right from the get go Holanda had as much interest in standing with Bell as Bell had with taking Holanda down. “The Mastermind” dove for the takedown and secured it but Bell was wise to it and promptly popped back to his feet. It would all be for naught for Bell, as the ground game would prove to be dangerous territory for him. Holanda looked more like “The Blob” then the “Mastermind” as he almost enveloped his opponent on the ground, smothering him and transitioning seamlessly from various top positions, to back mount, sneaking in submission attempts at every angle. Eventually Bell was able to work himself to the top position but “The Blob” inhaled Bell’s head and arm to cinch in the ever tightening triangle choke, forcing him to gasp for air and tapout in the first round. It was almost ironic that Mark Pavelich who manages Fabio Holanda pitted his fighter against Bell who is managed by his son Dave Pavelich. It was father vs. son in this match and in the end the elder statesmen laid claim to the first battle as Holanda won the fight in impressive fashion.

Fabio Holanda Signs with Pro Camp Sports Management

Brazilian black belt to fight in MFC 10

Mark Pavelich, the owner/president of Pro Camp Sports Management and the Maximum Fighting Championship, is pleased to announce the signing of lightweight sensation Fabio Holanda.

Holanda, who was born in Brazil and now lives in Montreal, is a Brazilian ju-jitsu black belt and a member of Brazilian Top Team Canada. He will make his debut in the Maximum Fighting Championship ring Sept. 8 at MFC 10 – Unfinished Business.

“Fabio has so much skill and the potential to be a major threat to anyone in the 155-pound division. It is a real pleasure to have him join Pro Camp Sports Management along with Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald and Victor “The Matrix” Valimaki,” said Pavelich.

“And along with all his talent, Fabio has tremendous character and the ability to share his knowledge which makes him a great asset to our team.”

After years of self-managing his career, Holanda decided it was in his best interest to sign on with Pro Camp.

“I want to fight more often and anywhere,” said Holanda. “Mark is a good manager and puts on a very good show. It’s a good move for me so that I can focus on my training. I have been teaching, traveling with my fighters, training and managing myself. Now I have one less thing to do and I’ll be better ready for my fights.”

Holanda, 27, has high expectations for himself highlighted by a quest for championship gold.

“I want to build my record and, like everybody else, I want to fight in the UFC or in Pride,” he said. “For sure I want the MFC title and all the title belts in Canada. “I’ve been working a lot on my standup and boxing and I’m pretty comfortable with it. I’m still working on my wrestling and it’s coming along well. My ju-jitsu is still my strongest part but I never forget to keep training at it and getting better. My game plan is setting things up with the standup with the idea of getting the takedown and submitting my opponent.”

Holanda is no stranger to the Maximum Fighting Championship. In March, Holanda was in the corner of Patrick “The Predator” Cote when he earned the MFC middleweight title in a five-round epic battle with MacDonald. Holanda’s expertise in preparing Cote for that bout was obvious and those lessons have propelled Cote into “The Ultimate Fighter – The Comeback” which begins Aug. 17 on Spike TV.

Holanda holds two wins over a pair of significant Canadian foes. In September 2004, he defeated Pride fighter Kultar Gill by Kimura submission. Last July, Holanda dominated Blake Fredrickson, needing less than three minutes to win by armbar submission.
